News - October 2010

As an Original Print workshop we have always tried to communicate the creative process to our collectors and clients, and as visual people we thought the best way was to make a video. With the invaluable services of Will and Andy (Echo Video Productions – Brighton) they interpreted our requirements expertly and now all can view the results on YouTube.

Moving down a generation, we have also made three new works with Gary Goodman who was taught by Harvey many years ago during his time at Brighton University where, coincidentally, Gary is now teaching.

Norbert Lynton said of Gary’s work “Goodman’s paintings have coherence, beauty, vividness: they are much more than jottings from his personal diary, though that would be a lot: they are intelligently worked art, in which impulse, not to mention the instinctual talent of the true painter, is mitigated by self-awareness, self-criticism.” “Primitive? Crude? I marvel at his lyricism and delicacy.”

We are enthusiastically promoting Jill Gibbon’s four screenprints not just because she has great talent and observational skills but because her subject matter needs serious consideration. Jill Gibbon is attempting to take on the military-industrial complex by drawing it. A discrete network of alliances between arms corporations and governments, the military-industrial complex is difficult to pin down. It is most visible at arms fairs but here it is veiled behind polite rituals of business. Jill gets access to these events by describing herself as a war artist, under the pretext of sketching tanks for paintings. But once inside, instead of sketching, she caricatures the handshakes, illicit liaisons and sweeteners in an attempt to get behind the polite facade.
